Since 1923, the University of Puget Sound has endeavored to build a campus environment that reflects the values and mission of the institution and adapt to needs of new generations of students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.

Puget Sound’s 20-year campus development plan builds upon the legacy of the past century and envisions a bold future with a built environment that continues to support academic success.

An Eye Toward the Future

Working with a wide group of stakeholders, Puget Sound and our partners have developed a plan to guide the development of our campus for the next 20 years and beyond. The 2023–43 Campus Development Plan focuses on the organization and rehabilitation of existing buildings, maximizing outdoor spaces and campus connections, and identifying opportunities to create new revenue streams.

Guiding Principles

  1. Realization of Our Mission & Vision
  • Identify needs for academic and cocurricular facilities.
  • Encourage social and intellectual interaction, indoors and out.
  • Focus on the student experience for strategic improvements to recruitment and retention.

2. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Ensure equitable and inclusive culture through welcoming and appropriate cocurricular spaces.
  • Provide equitable teaching and learning spaces.
  • Improve physical accessibility.

3. Campus & University Identity

  • Improve the quality and aesthetics of indoor and outdoor spaces on campus.
  • Clarify university identity at its edges.

4. Stewardship

  • Incorporate best uses of the physical resources.
  • Encourage alternative revenue streams.
  • Consider property acquisition strategies.

5. Sustainability

  • Minimize environmental impacts of building/landscape operations and development.
  • Encourage the use of alternative transportation.
  • Adoption of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Silver Standard whenever possible.

6. Flexibility to Adapt to Change

  • Provide flexible spaces and facilities that can evolve with innovative learning and research and the needs of the campus community.

7. Safety & Security

  • Support a welcoming and safe campus environment through safety and security upgrades.
