Max Tapogna ’20
The Chism Fund in the Humanities and Arts Award Recipient Summer Research Topic: Art versus Theory
Max Tapogna ’20

"This summer I've been able to explore ideas about theatre and playmaking that are important to me. I believe I have grown as both a student and an artist through engaging with ideas my research is centered on — acting, authorship, and collaboration. I've crafted my own vocabulary on these topics that I'll continue to develop for years to come."

Ashley Hong ’23
Betsy Campbell Stone ’79, P’14 and Thom Stone ’14 Annual Scholarship
Ashley Hong ’23

"When I went through the process of choosing colleges, I knew that a small liberal arts college would be a great fit for myself but constantly worried about whether or not my family could afford it. It truly warms my heart having received support towards my education. I appreciate it very much and hope that one day I will be able to do the same for a student in the future!"

Lia Chin-Purcell ’20
Agricola Scholar - Summer Research Topic: Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Transgender Gender Recognition
Lia Chin-Purcell ’20

"One of the unique things about being able to do research this summer was that I was able to work on a project that was my own idea, which was relatively new and original. It was a great opportunity to work on something I was really interested in and passionate about, and also gain support and knowledge from my advisor along the way. This allowed me to explore what research would be like in an area that I’m interested in, despite not having a specific program for it at our school."

Harold Liufau ’22
Asian/Pacific Islander Identity Endowed Scholarship
Harold Liufau ’22

"I cannot thank the Asian/Pacific Islander Identity Endowed Scholarship enough, for opening new doors and allowing me to reach new heights. Ohana means family, and family is what I intend to create on campus with other Islander students. Here at Puget Sound, I will get involved with the Multicultural Outreach and Recruitment program, which influences high school students who need support in navigating college access. Helping students who have experienced similar hardships achieve their goals is a passion of mine, because I believe students who are facing hardships should not let anything hinder them from attending, continuing, and leaving college. I look forward to utilizing this scholarship to maximize my potential in becoming a resource of information and positivity to the younger generations."
