Economics professors Bruce Mann and Douglas Goodman have been preparing the Pierce County Economic Index (PCEI) for nearly 20 years. The PCEI is an 18-month forward-looking forecast for the overall economy, labor market conditions, income, and housing activity. Each year, it is presented to business, government, and other organizational leaders to help them plan for the next year.

The PCEI was the first economic index of its kind in the United States and remained a few econometrically based local-area forecasting models. The development and implementation of the forecast use both student research and the expertise of university faculty. Professors Mann and Goodman also meet with community groups on an individual basis to help them utilize the outlook to meet their needs best.
