Laura Splan, an exciting interdisciplinary artist will be visiting us from Brooklyn New York to present her artist talk - "Syndemic Sublime" connecting hidden artifacts of biology to everyday lives through embodied interactions and sensory engagement Laura Splan’s artist talk “Syndemic Sublime” presents her research-driven projects connecting hidden artifacts of biology to everyday lives through embodied interactions and sensory engagement. Working with a range of traditional and new media techniques, Splan explores intersections of science, technology, and culture with projects that include molecular animations, data-driven imagery, networked sculptures, and textiles made with the hand-spun wool of laboratory animals. Her solo exhibition Rhapsody for an Expanded Biotechnological Apparatus is currently on view at the Tang Teaching Museum (Saratoga Springs, NY) in a site-specific installation that reenvisions an elevator as a biological cell and its visitors as proteins as they experience a haptic textiles sculpture and sonic tour of a biotech laboratory. Laura Splan is a Brooklyn, NY-based interdisciplinary artist. Her artworks have been commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control Foundation and the Triënnale Brugge. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts & Design, Pioneer Works, and New York Hall of Science and is represented in the collections of the Thoma Art Foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and the Berkeley Art Museum. Splan’s research and residencies have been supported by the Jerome Foundation, Institute for Electronic Arts, uCity Science Center, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She has been a visiting lecturer at Stanford University teaching interdepartmental courses including “Art & Biology”. She was a Digital Arts Fellow at AS220 supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and is currently a community member of NEW INC, a cultural incubator at the New Museum in New York City.
