Hello Puget Sound!
It is that time of year again. We are gearing up to welcome new students and their families, reconnect with returning students, and kick off the academic year. Please take a moment to review the following events. Some are open to the entire campus community, while others are specifically designed for members with shared identities. We hope you'll find something to enjoy!
Move-in Weekend and Passages Week Overview Session
Tuesday, Aug. 13 | 11 a.m. | Rotunda
This session is designed to familiarize the campus community with Move-In Weekend and Passages Week for incoming students and their families. You'll hear from staff in Residence Life, Alumni and Parent Relations, and Passages Orientation. We'll also provide FAQ sheets at the end of the session for those who might have questions from new students or their families during move-in.
Welcome Walk
Friday, Aug. 23 | *5 p.m. | Commencement Walk near Peyton Field
The Welcome Walk is a tradition that began after the completion of the Commencement Walk. It's a chance for the campus community to welcome new students and their families. The walk takes place at the end of Convocation, around 5 p.m. on Move-In Day, Friday, Aug. 23. Everyone is invited to make welcome signs, wear their Logger gear, and line up along the walk near Peyton Field. Families will exit Memorial Stadium and pass through our Welcome Walk on their way to the Welcome Festival on Wheelock Plaza. We hope you are able to join us for this event.
Identity-Based Welcomes
The Passages Team is excited to invite members of Puget Sound to the identity-based welcome events during the first and second week of classes. These annual events are an important part of how we help incoming students find places of welcome, connection, and belonging on campus. If you consider yourself a member of the following identities, please consider attending to meet and welcome new students.
Veterans' Welcome
RSVP Requested
Wednesday, Sept. 4 | Noon–1 p.m. | Trimble Forum
If you are a veteran or come from a family of veterans, please join us for a welcome from our student, faculty, and staff veterans. Lunch will be served.
Loggers of Color Welcome
Wednesday, Sept. 4 | 5–6 p.m. | Rotunda
The annual Students of Color Welcome is an opportunity for Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, bi- and multiracial students and those who identify as people of color to gather and welcome incoming students with these shared identities to campus. Light refreshments will be served. We acknowledge the diversity of experiences and identities within this large group while also recognizing the power of building relationships within and across identities, particularly at a predominantly white institution. This gathering seeks to be one of the initial touchstones available for students to begin connecting with each other and faculty and staff of shared identities.
LGBTQIA+ Welcome
Thursday, Sept. 12 | 5–6 p.m. | Upper Marshall Hall
The annual LGBTQIA+ Welcome is an opportunity for incoming students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or non-binary, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual, agender, or as generally within the queer umbrella to meet and be welcomed by returning students, faculty, and staff who share these identities. Light refreshments will be served. We acknowledge the diversity of experiences and identities within this large umbrella while also recognizing the power of building relationships within and across identities. Thus this gathering seeks to be one of the early touchstones available for students to begin connecting with each other and with faculty and staff of shared identities.
Thank you,
Skylar Marston-Bihl | Director of Student Involvement & Programs
