Scheduling Appointments
In order to ensure that we can extend our reach to all UPS students who wish to use our services, we have set limits to the number of appointments that any single student can make at the CWL as follows:
Maximum appointments per week
A student may schedule only two appointments each for writing & speaking advising, subject tutoring, and academic consulting in any seven-day period and no more than four appointments total in that period. For instance, a student can schedule two appointments with a subject tutor for math and two appointments to work on a draft with a writing & speaking advisor in a seven-day period. However, the student cannot make 3 writing appointments in a given seven-day period.
Exceptions
One exception to the above policies is when we have unfilled openings on our schedule. These are appointments that would otherwise be left unused. In those cases, a student who has already reached their daily or weekly appointment limit may take an appointment on a "drop-in" basis or through the wait-list.
Note that students may only schedule appointments that they can attend in its entirety; meaning, students may not schedule an appointment for which they must arrive late or leave early.
Canceling Appointments
If you need to cancel your appointment, it is recommended that you do so three hours in advance. Please call 253.879.3404 or send an email to cwlappointments@pugetsound.edu. During midterms and finals, appointments should be cancelled 24 hours in advance and may be treated as a no-show if proper notice is not given. We often have more requests than we can possibly accommodate with appointments, so it is important to be courteous to your fellow students.
Holding Appointments
We can only hold your appointments for 10 minutes after the appointment is scheduled to begin. If you are running late, please call us to let us know that you are on your way so that we may hold your appointment. After 10 minutes, we’ll call the first person on the waitlist.
Missed Appointments
There are a limited number of appointments every day at the CWL, and we want to ensure that those appointment times are used. If you have two or more no-shows in the same semester and would like to continue using the CWL in this or future semesters, you may be blocked from making future appointments at the CWL until you have an in-person conversation with Julie Christoph, the CWL Director, or Alice Brown, the Assistant Director, explaining the circumstances of your missed appointments.
If you cannot make it to an appointment, call us, leaving a voicemail if no one answers (253.879.3404), or send us an email (cwlappointments@pugetsound.edu) at least three hours in advance.
Alumni Appointments
We frequently work with alumni who are working on personal statements for post-graduation opportunities like fellowships and professional/graduate school applications. First priority for appointments goes to current students, but if you contact the CWL by phone at 253.879.3404, or at cwlappointments@pugetsound.edu clarifying that you are an alum working on a personal statement, we can usually get you an appointment in person or online via Zoom or Google Meet.
Community Member Appointments
We are only able to offer appointments to members of the University of Puget Sound community (that is, current students, current and emeritus faculty, and current staff, as well as alumni). In addition to these University of Puget Sound community members, auditing students may attend drop-in hours. Greater Tacoma community members are encouraged to post a position to hire a student tutor via Career and Employment Services.
The Center for Writing and Learning Policy on Generative Artificial Intelligence
The Center for Writing and Learning remains a space to empower students in developing subject-area skills and knowledge, as well as writing and speaking abilities. Though generative artificial intelligence is widely available for students to use, the CWL adheres to the Puget Sound Academic Integrity Policy and individual professor policies regarding GAI. We welcome students who would like to improve their academic work and will not report students who have utilized GAI to do so. Therefore, we expect students to be honest about their use of GAI aid in assignments so we can help them build skills to feel less reliant on GAI platforms, and succeed through their own writing and work.
