Drew Kerkhoff

Provost and Professor, Biology

Drew Kerkhoff, Provost at the University of Puget Sound, is a renowned quantitative ecologist whose research focuses on the ecology and evolution of plant biodiversity and the functional role of Earth's vegetation in the global carbon cycle. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles, contributing significantly to the scientific community’s understanding of ecological patterns and processes. His work, supported by multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, employs mathematical and computational methods to explore how vegetation patterns influence and are influenced by climate change, providing valuable insights for biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation efforts.

Provost Kerkhoff's scholarly contributions are marked by an interdisciplinary approach that bridges the gap between theoretical ecology and practical application. His research has advanced knowledge on the global carbon cycle, emphasizing the importance of plant biodiversity in regulating ecological systems. Through his innovative use of quantitative methods, Kerkhoff has developed models that elucidate the complex interactions between plants and their environments, offering new perspectives on ecosystem dynamics and resilience.

In addition to his research, Kerkhoff has made substantial contributions to the academic community through his teaching and curriculum development. At Kenyon College, he integrated computational and data science approaches into the biology curriculum, ensuring that students wer well-versed in modern analytical techniques. He also developed a pioneering science and nature writing program, which combines rigorous scientific training with effective communication skills, preparing students to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.

Provost Kerkhoff’s dedication to education extends beyond the classroom. He has mentored numerous undergraduate students, guiding them in research projects that contribute to the broader field of ecology. His commitment to fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating research environment has made a lasting impact on his students and colleagues alike. At the University of Puget Sound, Kerkhoff continues to promote interdisciplinary research and education, driving forward the institution’s mission to engage deeply with ecological and environmental challenges.
