Associate Professor, School of Education
Prof. Conteh is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC - WA), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC – PA and OH), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and Board-Certified Tele-Mental Health (BC-TMH) Counselor. He has been a mental health counselor for over 20 years including supervision of counselors-in-training and counselors working towards licensure. John regards the West Coast as home and recently established a private practice to help fill the existing gap in mental health service provision.
Prof. Conteh was the 2023 Research Award winner for the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (WACES) Region and has been a mental health counselor for over 20 years. Service to the counseling profession includes peer-review board memberships in the Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision, and Journal of Educators Online, as well as mentoring counselors-in-training.
John's higher education full-time teaching journey began in 2012 as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Duquesne University, and later as an Assistant Professor at SUNY Plattsburgh, Assistant and Associate Professor at Wright State University. He has also served as Core Faculty Antioch University Seattle. Also, he was the Founding Co-Director for a Trauma-Informed Counseling Certificate while at Wright State University. Moreover, he previously served as Faculty Advisor for Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, and currently establishing a Chi Sigma Iota Chapter in the MEd Counseling Program, School of Education, University of Puget Sound. He has memberships in various professional counseling and research organizations including American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, WACES, African Studies and Research Forum. He enjoys US cross-country driving, exploring the Canadian landscape, and exploring national parks including Mt. Rainier and the Rocky Mountains.

RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS
John has interest in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, and conceptual perspectives. Some of his research work and publications include cultural responsiveness in research, international research, international counseling, trauma-informed counseling, quality of life, counselors-in-training self-efficacy, legal and ethical issues surrounding social media, substance use and abuse, and multicultural issues and intersectionality.
