Discussion group as part of Puget Sound's MAT program.

Our one-year MAT program uses a reflective, collaborative, and justice-oriented approach to prepare future teachers to create productive, inclusive learning environments through hands-on learning. Teacher candidates have the opportunity to explore questions such as: How can I create a productive learning environment to meaningfully engage my students? How can I foster students’ academic, social, and emotional development? How can I confront bias and inequity in my school?  Students work closely with campus based professors and experienced mentor teachers within a cohort-based model.  Classes are experiential-oriented and closely integrated with local school-based placements.

Students in an Education class engage in discussion.

Undergraduates at Puget Sound can explore multiple facets of the field of education through the Education Studies minor. Students participate in local education settings and use a social justice lens to examine topics such as economic inequality, literacy, and gender. Those interested in pursuing teacher certification can do so as part of the 4+1 program, which provides Education Studies minors a streamlined pathway to the MAT program. Such students can earn their undergraduate degree, master's, and residency teaching certificate in just five years.

Students in the counseling program engage in a partner exercise.

Puget Sound’s MEd program in Counseling prepares students to be change agents as either a school counselor or clinical mental health counselor. This five-semester program provides students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills through collaboration, mentorship, and individual counseling placements. An accelerated course of study is available for strong Puget Sound graduates who contact the program early in their undergraduate education.
