This event is sponsored by the Catharine Gould Chism Fund for the Humanities and co-sponsored by the departments of African American Studies, Asian Studies, English, Philosophy, and Religion, Spirituality, and Society; the Crime, Law and Justice Program; the School of Education; the University Chaplaincy; and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity.
Join us for a conversation between award-winning author and filmmaker, Curtis Chin, and Associate Professor of African American Studies and author of Meet Behind Mars, Renee Simms.
Chin’s memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant, is about growing up as a Chinese American kid in 1980’s Detroit, coming out as gay in a working-class immigrant community, and finding his way as a first-generation college student at the University of Michigan.
The book was recently selected by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association for Excellence in Book Writing and has earned many other awards and accolades. In addition to the book, Chin is working on a docuseries about the history of Chinese restaurants in the United States, a project that builds on the memoir, which has a chapter structure organized around the menu of his parents' Chinese restaurant.
