As a former philosophy professor with over 12 years of experience working on emerging tech, Dr. Van Hollebeke is committed to confronting the socio-technical challenges that strain existing legal and societal norms and make people think through what they value most (and how to preserve and enhance those things!). He closed out a 10+ year career at Microsoft helping to ship multiple products incorporating OpenAI models. At Google, he is a Staff Research Scientist within the Technology & Society team, putting his philosophical mindset into practice every day. His most recent work focuses on investigating and addressing the societal impacts of LLMs and generative AI. Should we limit people's inputs into AI systems and the outputs that result? How should we think about what AI is in relationship to human dignity and what makes us most human? How can we ensure that all people can get access to the benefits of AI?
