Genevieve Caskey received a Summer Research Grant to explore the history of the humanities on our campus under the guidance of Professor Katherine Smith.
"I have attempted to take classes within a rage of topics, including Latin American, African, Asian, and European, in order to complete my History major. Supplementing my interest in world history I have also taken classes in Sociology & Anthropology, African American Studies, and Art History, in order to engage with themes of identity and culture internationally so as to enrich my History education. The Interdisciplinary Humanities Emphasis Pathway 'Challenging Inequality: Issues of Race and Ethnicity,' has been a perfect encapsulation of this goal, as it allows me to take engaging classes of varying disciplines in a way that feels structured. This has lead to my excitement to explore the history of the Humanities of the University of Puget Sound, not only because the Humanities Pathways have served me so well, but because the Humanities is largely considered the birth place of departments centered on personal identity, sexuality, and race that I find so interesting, enriching, and important."
