Lucy McIntyre Jewett ’50, P’79
1929–2023
Lucille McIntyre (Lucy) Jewett ’50, P’79, a philanthropist, art collector, Puget Sound trustee emerita, and America’s Cup patron, died Dec. 22, 2023, in San Francisco. She was 94.

Born in St. Louis, she later moved with her family to Tacoma and studied at Puget Sound, where she was active in Pi Beta Phi sorority. She married George F. (Fritz) Jewett Jr. in Tacoma and they lived in Idaho for a time before moving to the Bay Area in 1965.

Jewett became active with the San Francisco Ballet, spearheading a “Save the Ballet” campaign during a financial crisis in 1974 and serving on the ballet’s board from 1969 until her death. She also attended performances regularly and often headed backstage during intermission or after the show to encourage the dancers. The San Francisco Chronicle once called her “a quiet force credited with keeping classical dance alive in the city.” A large dance studio at the ballet’s headquarters is named the Jewett Studio in her honor.

The couple also were involved in the America’s Cup for more than 40 years. They helped fund a number of Cup-winning syndicates, including the one that backed Stars & Stripes, which—skippered by Dennis Conner—won the America’s Cup in 1987. In the photo above, Lucy is shown with the “Auld Mug” on the flight home from that win; after that victory, she rode on a float in a New York City ticker-tape parade, an experience she described as “incredible.” Both Jewetts were inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The two were also avid art collectors, and Lucy also enjoyed hosting parties in her San Francisco home. George died in 2008.

Jewett stayed close to her alma mater for many years: She served on the university’s Board of Trustees from 1959–87 and, with her husband, supported the school financially. They endowed the George Frederick Jewett Chair in Business in 1980, and McIntyre Hall is named for Lucy’s father, Charles Edwin McIntyre, following a major gift from the George F. Jewett Foundation to help fund its construction.

The couple had two children, Betsy and George Jewett III ’79. George III is also a former Puget Sound trustee.
