TACOMA, Wash. – Grammy Award-winning New York jazz artist Lew Tabackin will bring his electrifying flute and distinctive tenor sax styles to the stage in Tacoma on Thursday, March 10, when he appears at University of Puget Sound. The world-touring soloist will perform with the University of Puget Sound Jazz Band, under the direction of Wayne Horvitz, in Schneebeck Concert Hall, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Tabackin, a recording artist whose career has taken him from the Big Band scene in Manhattan to stage performances with European orchestras, has a flute style that has been described as at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. On tenor saxophone he employs abrupt changes of mood and tempo, wide intervals, and purposeful fervor, employing the full range of possibilities of his instrument. Without emulating jazz greats of the past, Tabackin has absorbed elements of their work into his style, ultimately creating his own sound.

The winner in the flute category of Downbeat magazine’s Best International Critic’s Poll 2010 and a four-time winner in the Swing Journal Reader’s Poll, Tabackin has been associated with all-star bands including George Wein's Newport All-Star Band, the New York Jazz Giants, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. In 1996 Concord Records released Tenority, Tabackin's first recording concentrating solely on tenor sax. Subsequently he has released the CDs Tanuki's Night Out, Live in Paris, and Quartet. Tabackin is married to fellow multi-Grammy winning pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, who performed at Puget Sound last year.

Tickets are available at Wheelock Student Center Information Center. Admission is $9 general admission or $4 with University of Puget Sound identification. The event is sponsored by Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound.
