SPOKANE, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's basketball team dropped their second Northwest Conference game of the weekend 78-45 against Whitworth. The Loggers (2-5, 0-2 NWC) couldn't find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 27.4 percent in the game.
Derek Jobe led the Loggers with 12 points off the bench, while Riggs Yarbro had nine points.
A slow start put the Loggers in another big hole as the 20th-ranked Pirates (5-1, 2-0 NWC) jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the first four minutes of the contest. Jobe's first three-pointer of the game ended the drought and put the Loggers down seven.
However, that would be as close as the Loggers would get in the first half. Whitworth shot 47.2 percent in the game, including a 40 percent effort behind the three-point line.
Colton McCarger led both teams with 18 points off the bench for the hosts. Dustin McConnell had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Whitworth led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but Jobe scored the final five points of the half to cut the lead to single digits heading into the locker room.
The run continued to open the second half as Yarbro scored the first four points out of the break. A layup and a pair of free throws from Yarbro slashed the lead to 34-29 in the first minute of the second half, but Whitworth went on an 11-0 run to push the lead back into double digits where it stayed the rest of the way.
The Loggers head down to southern California next week for three big games with SCIAC opponents. First up, the Loggers will face Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
