TACOMA, Wash. - Artists from five NW colleges are displaying works and hosting the inaugural Northwest Five Painting Colloquium to engage artists and the public with painting from a fresh perspective, Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4, at University of Puget Sound. Everyone in love with art or who wants to learn more about contemporary art is invited. The colloquium is free, but registration is required. See link below for details.

To Glitch or Not to Glitch? This is the question to be asked by keynote speaker Linda Besemer on Friday night, 7:30–8:30 p.m., in the Tahoma Room, Thomas Hall. The international exhibitor and James Irvine Distinguished Professor of the Arts at Occidental College has been exploring digitally generated images and their errant artifacts—errors or glitches. She uses digital glitches to create new compositions and sees the glitch as a potential form of resistance to Cartesian rationalism and humanist ideal forms.

ALSO, two art exhibits, free and open to the public, run alongside the colloquium. Phenomenal and Liberal run Oct. 2–Nov. 4 at Kittredge Gallery, University of Puget Sound. Liberal features work by the NW5 painting professors: Michael Knutson (Reed College), Richard Martinez (Whitman), Cara Tomlinson (Lewis & Clark), James Thompson (Willamette), and Elise Richman (Puget Sound).

Phenomenal involves painters Eric Elliott, Anne Gale, Emily Gherard, Ron Graff, and Jan Reaves, whose work exemplifies painting’s potential to reveal subjective experience through its shared language.

The colloquium is made possible by the Catharine Gould Chism Fund for the Humanities and Arts, and the Department of Art and Art History at Puget Sound.
