Noel Sollom-Brotherton M.A.T.’11 and Professor Fred Hamel head to Vancouver

TACOMA, Wash. – School of Education graduate Noel Sollom-Brotherton M.A.T.’11 will co-present a paper at the teaching profession’s most prestigious academic conference next spring—the 2012 annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Sollom-Brotherton’s paper, "Whose Space? Finding Third Space in an Urban High School Literature Classroom," was selected from more than 11,000 submissions. The achievement by the summer 2011 Master of Arts in Teaching graduate is of particular note because the great majority of papers accepted are from established professors and Ph.D. students from around the country.

“I’m delighted and impressed that Noel’s paper was accepted in this highly prestigious forum,” said Professor of Education Fred Hamel, who advised on the thesis. “Noel was working with concepts that are unusual, yet quite central to education, and he did some cutting-edge thinking that challenges traditional conceptions of curriculum.”

Hamel will co-present the paper with Sollom-Brotherton at the 2012 AERA Annual Meeting, which will be held April 13–17, 2012, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Sollom-Brotherton developed his ideas by studying work that Lincoln High School students submitted for a literature assignment in their English class.

Sollom-Brotherton is a graduate of Dublin High School in Dublin, Calif., where he recently was hired to teach English/language arts. He is a resident of Scotts Valley, Calif.
