Research about mixed-weight couples attracts international attention in press

TACOMA, Wash. – The Wall Street Journal ran a story based on research by Visiting Assistant Professor Tricia Burke, in communication studies, last week. Columnist Elizabeth Bernstein interviewed Burke and cited research that she published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in a story titled “Put a Stop to ‘Do I Look fat?’.”

Burke was the lead author of a study looking at the effect of weight issues in a relationship. The study of 43 heterosexual couples found that those reporting the most conflict were a healthy-weight man and an overweight woman. When just the man was overweight, couples reported no more conflict than same-weight couples.

The story was picked up by several other media in the United States, Great Britain, and India.
