Dear Members of the Campus Community,
In just a few hours, the media will be filled with news and opinions about the sentencing of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.
While we don’t yet know what the sentence will be, we do know that it won’t repair the irrevocable harm that has been done. It won’t restore Mr. Floyd’s life. It won’t take away the pain of his family and loved ones. It won’t erase the persistent, systemic infliction of racism in our country.
But I believe that it will give us hope that justice can be served, and will bring us together as a community, once again, to draw strength from one another and work to effect real, meaningful, lasting change.
Please remember that this community is here for you. Counseling, Health and Wellness Services (253.879.1555 or chws@pugetsound.edu); the Chaplain’s office (253.879.3818 or dwright@pugetsound.edu); the Employee Assistance Program for faculty and staff members; and other offices and services are important resources for support.
Today has the potential to be yet another significant turning point in becoming the nation and the people we are called to be. Let’s make it so.
