University of Puget Sound faculty were recently honored for their work and contribution for the 2023–24 academic year during an awards dinner. The annual awards dinner recognized exceptional contributions to teaching, research, and service, showcasing the university’s commitment to academic excellence. The award winners include:

Andy Rex, Professor, Physics accepts the Walter Lowrie Service Award from Provost Drew Kerkhoff and Professor Justin Tiehen.

Walter Lowrie Service Award  

The Walter Lowrie Service Award honors faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the university community. This year’s recipients are:

Eric Orlin, Professor Emeritus, Greek, Latin, & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Bartanen Research Award

The Bartanen Research Award recognizes faculty members for their outstanding scholarly achievements. Established in 2016, these awards are named after Kris Bartanen, a former Academic Vice President and Provost at Puget Sound. 

Junior Research Award: Sara Protasi, Associate Professor of Philosophy

Senior Research Award: Nick Brody, Professor of Communication Studies

“The Bartanen awards celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our faculty in research and professional development,” said Provost Drew Kerkhoff. “They highlight our commitment to intellectual excellence and contribute to Puget Sound’s reputation as an outstanding liberal arts institution.”

T.A. Davis Teaching Award

The T.A. Davis Teaching Award recognizes faculty members for their teaching skills and dedication to student success. 

This year’s recipients are:

Hajung Lee, Associate Professor of Religion, Spirituality, & Society

Jake Price, Associate Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science

President’s Excellence in Teaching Award

The President’s Excellence in Teaching Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member for their outstanding contributions to teaching and the university community. 

This year’s recipient is:

Sam Kigar, Associate Professor, Religion, Spirituality, & Society

“Sam Kigar is a truly inspiring educator who has had a profound impact on the lives of our students,” Kerkhoff said. “Their dedication to teaching, mentorship, and scholarship exemplifies the very best of Puget Sound.”
