Creating and leading a study abroad program can be one of the best moments of a faculty members’ teaching experience. However, it can also be a very challenging experience for faculty.

Although, you’ll have an opportunity to bring the curriculum to life and explore topics in a focused setting away from campus, you’ll also be asked to support students as they deal with home sickness and roommate issues. Additionally, you’ll be asked to manage student conduct and other situations or emergencies that may occur while abroad. Don’t forget, while teaching your course and leading your program, you’ll also be asked to manage your budget and submit receipts for the financial reconciliation at the end of the program.

This isn’t meant to overwhelm you or to make you feel daunted at the thought of creating and leading a study abroad program. Instead, it’s important you understand the commitment and responsibility involved with creating and leading a program abroad at Puget Sound. The more time to invest in the planning and creation of your program, the better opportunity you have to run a smooth and successful study abroad program and always remember that OIP is here to support you in this process.

Faculty-led Study Abroad Programs normally involve a faculty member teaching a course during the fall or spring semester and then bringing students abroad during the winter break or summer. However, faculty are free to explore other possibilities.

Programs are not required to be created and run by faculty on their own. Faculty may choose to work with a program provider to create and run a program. Examples of our program providers who can work with faculty to create a customized faculty-led program.

Before speaking with a program provider about a customized program please contact the Director of International Programs, Roy Robinson.
