The Marriage of Language and Sound, Matthew Norton Clapp Visiting Artists Endowment

Lawrence Huffines- guest Sound Designer for Rent, opening Feb. 26th, 2016

  • In addition to creating the sound world for the show, Lawrence Huffines will teach voice and theatre students about performing with amplification, design principles and opportunities in the world of sound, and the "state of the industry" for sound equipment, design, and technology. This visit will enrich our pedagogy, our production, and the intellectual life of the university as we engage with the physical, vocal, and technical demands of this genre.

Brian Yorkey- guest artist, Spring 2016

  • In 2010 Brian Yorkey and his collaborator Tom Kitt won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for their work writing the Tony award-winning musical, Next to Normal. This was the first time that a musical won the Pulitzer since Larson won for Rent in 1996. Like Rent, Next to Normal was heralded for changing the landscape of the American musical by tackling unconventional material in unconventional ways. Yorkey will visit for five days and engage with theatre and music students through class visits, a public forum, and a master class.

Dave Malloy- guest artist, Spring 2016

  • Dave Malloy describes himself as a “composer/writer/performer/sound designer/musical director/pianist/theater slash artist”. Malloy has explored classical forms, experimental structures, and new sounds and he has done this by working as a total artist. He is an exciting voice in the off-Broadway scene, a valuable role model for young artists, and a tremendous resource for our students. His visit over five days will include class visits in theatre and music, a performance, and public forum.

Marisa Michelson- guest artist, Spring 2016

  • Marisa Michelson is a Jonathan Larson Award winning composer, singer and voice teacher passionate about the human ability to express and communicate through singing/sound-making. Marisa was recently awarded a MacDowell and Ucross fellowship to begin a new music-movement piece about Hildegard von Bingen and Heloise d’Argenteuil. She will engage with students through class visits in theatre and music, a public forum, and an intimate performance of her work.
