First-year students Move-in Day

Additional Housing Inforrmation

Residence halls will begin opening for first-years at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023. Arrival on this date is important to a successful start of your transition to Puget Sound and New Student Orientation.

Move-In

Move-in will begin at different intervals based on where you have been assigned to live. The intervals are created to allow maximum usage of your time and to avoid excessive waiting, which occurs when everyone arrives at the same time.

  • 9 a.m. ━ Third floor, or rooms that start with 3.
  • 9:45 a.m. ━ Ground level and fourth floors, or rooms that start with 0 or 4.
  • 10:30 a.m. ━ Second floor, or rooms that start with 2
  • 11:15 a.m. ━ First floor, or rooms that start with 1

We ask that you not arrive prior to the designated times in order to avoid lines and congestion with parking. If you plan to arrive on campus earlier than your designated move-in time, we suggest you report to the Welcome Center and complete the check-in steps for Passages, our new student orientation, before reporting to your new residence on campus.

Parking/Unloading

During the check-in process, we have designated a specific unloading area for you based on your housing assignment. Please use the parking lot listed below that corresponds with your building.

  • If you will reside in Anderson/Langdon Hall or Harrington Hall use the parking lot located at North 18th and Warner Streets (Lot 5);
  • If you will reside in Todd/Phibbs Hall use parking lot located at North 14th and Union Streets (Lot 4);
  • If you will reside in Schiff Hall use the parking lot located at North 18th and Lawrence Streets (Lot 6).

These areas will be designated as unloading zones only. Once you have unloaded your personal belongings, you will be directed by staff from Security Services to the nearest permanent parking lot for the duration of the New Student Orientation weekend.

Furnishings

Your room will be furnished with the following furniture (measurements are approximate): wardrobe (45”x51”x24”), desk (42”x24”), desk chair, drawers (22”x22”x5”), bookcase with 2 shelves (30”x16”x15”), and bed (all beds are extended-length 80" twin).

Room (And Never Bored)

First-year students are assigned to one of six buildings, generally in double-occupancy rooms, with several floor plans. There may be a small number of triples and quad rooms, but those assignments vary from year to year.

We affirm the gender identity of all students and offer housing to fit your needs. You can make that indication on your housing application.

In your room:

  • Extended-length twin beds
  • Chests of drawers
  • Bookcases
  • Closets or wardrobes

In your residence:

  • Free laundry
  • Free wireless internet
  • Kitchen facilities
  • Televisions
  • Lounges
  • Study areas
  • Recreational areas

Register for Housing

First-year and transfer students who submit their deposits by May 1 are guaranteed housing in their first year. Here’s all you have to do:

1
Fill Out the Application

Fill out the housing application on myPugetSound by June 1. Request a specific roommate, if you want (you’ll both have to indicate this on the housing form). Indicate certain lifestyle characteristics to consider.

2
Get a Housing Assignment

You’ll be assigned to a residence hall and matched with a roommate. You don’t have to find a roommate ahead of time. About 80% of first-year students go through our roommate-matching process.

What To Pack—7 Tips

Clothes

Don’t overpack. Like it or not, you’ll be doing laundry. So bring your favorite tee, PJs, shoes and accessories, and one professional outfit. Oh, and a lint roller!

Toiletries

Go through your daily routine and figure out your essentials. If you forget anything, there’s a Walgreens on 6th Avenue.

Bedding

Bring your favorite pillow and My Hero Academia sheets (or whatever). The beds are twin XL.

Laundry supplies

You’ll need detergent, and don’t forget a stain stick! But also think about hampers and baskets—one for dirty clothes and one for clean.

School supplies

Notebooks, paper, and pens, and consider getting a backpack with a laptop slot.

First aid stuff

We’ve got great health services on campus, but you’ll want to keep band-aids, ibuprofen, and whatever else you see yourself (hopefully not) needing in an emergency.

A little fan

At some point in your college career you’ll think “Ah, the trusty fan. I use that thing all the time. All the time.”

Audrey Glabius

“I actually overpacked a bit, so I highly recommend sorting and removing things you won't really need.”

Olivia Almy

I would've packed more AA batteries. They are always more helpful than you'd think!”

Megan Mooney

“I wish I would have packed food storage containers because we hate food waste!”

Yes, You Can Send Things in Advance

If you want to ship some things over the summer, we’ll hold them for you. Send up to five boxes in advance, no sooner than August 1.

Wrap your boxes securely and address them like this, replacing the 0000 with your assigned mailbox number, which you’ll find on myPugetSound once your housing assignment is confirmed:

No, You Probably Don't Need a Car

Cars are allowed on campus, but you can walk to class, and there’s tons of places to eat and shop within walking distance. Plus there’s accessible public transportation.
