Manuel Ellis Teach-In

On March 3, 2020, Tacoma resident Manuel Ellis was killed by Tacoma police officers who are currently on trial for his death. A verdict is expected in December 2023. On Friday, Dec. 1, African American Studies and the Race & Pedagogy Institute are holding a teach-in about Ellis's death, its impact, and significance.

Communicating Conservation: Effective Knowledge Transfer Across Social Divides

As scientists, educators, and advocates for environmental conservation, we are often asked to effectively communicate about our work with a wide variety of audiences. In a world fraught with social, political, and cultural divisiveness, how can we address potential barriers to sharing conservation knowledge? This talk will offer real-world examples of science communication to briefly examine common pitfalls and best practices for successfully connecting with your audience. The presentation will include a brief lecture, interactive conversations, and a Q & A session.

Lecture: CJ Pascoe

Author, sociologist, and educator, CJ Pascoe is a sociologist who studies young people, and is an associate professor of sociology at the University of Oregon. Her latest book, "Nice is Not Enough: Inequality and the Limits of Kindness at American High", is currently available for preorder. Other books include "Gender Replay, "Dude You're a Fag", "Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out", and "Exploring Masculinities".

Israel, Palestine, Gaza- Histories of the Present with Dr. Liora Halperin

Israel, Palestine, and Gaza have multiple, entangled, and conflicting pasts. Professor Halperin will help us understand some of the historical frameworks that can be useful for understanding current events and how things got to this point, and will discuss how several of the groups most invested in these issues stitch together histories of the past and present as they envision potential futures.

World Music Concert: TRIO GUADALEVIN

Since 2014, Trio Guadalevin has literally traversed the parts of the world which taken their unique sound to stages all across America, both entertaining and educating their audiences to the musical connections ranging from the Mediterranean to Mexico, employing a wealth of instruments and techniques which reimagine the musical dialogue between indigenous, European and African cultures.

Harm Reduction Presentation

This hour-long session will prepare participants to recognize and respond to emergencies such as alcohol poisoning, opioid overdose/fentanyl poisoning. This This educational workshop is recommended for all people who use substances such as alcohol and other drugs, as well as those who may present when others are using. Training on how and when to administer Naloxone (Narcan) will be included.

Talk Saves Lives

A community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Participants will learn common risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide and how to keep themselves and others safe.
