This page features on-campus opportunities for learning and growth specifically for supervisors of regular staff members. These opportunities are sponsored by Human Resources.

Supervising with Intention and Integrity

This 4-part series is designed to foster community among people leaders and to create space for open, honest dialog about challenges and opportunities that come with supervision.

Deep Listening and Building Trustworthy Spaces

Tuesday, October 1, from 10a.m. to 12p.m., Murray Boardroom

At its core, supervision is a relationship, and this session offers participants the opportunity to expand their abilities to practice deep, careful listening as an essential component of relationships. By engaging with other participants, attendees will utilize a Circle of Trust© approach to build trustworthy spaces, to create community that is welcoming to all, and to reflect on how listening plays a key role in supervisory relationships. Whether new to supervision, or seasoned leaders, everyone will leave this session with new information, connections on campus, and commitments to growth.

Open Honest Questions

Tuesday, November 19, from 10a.m. to 12p.m., Trimble Forum

Questions can sometimes feel like an attack, a judgement, or as if they are designed to shut down rather than engage conversation. In this session, participants will discuss the role that open, honest questions play in a supervisory relationship and have the opportunity to practice in a safe environment. Attendees will explore their own experiences of "being supervised" and make a commitment to utilizing open, honest questions in their lives at work and beyond.

Gifts and Challenges for Supervising Others

Tuesday, February 11, from 10a.m. to 12p.m., Murray Boardroom

Each member of a team brings unique skills, background, life experiences, expectations, and more to work. While these differences can create challenges, they also offer opportunity. In this session, participants will engage in an activity related to what characteristics make an "effective" supervisor, reflect on what qualities they bring to supervision, along with challenges they've faced. In this collaborative, trusting space, attendees will have the opportunity to learn with and from other on campus in similar roles.

Appreciating the Value of Difference

Tuesday, March 11, from 10a.m. to 12p.m., Murray Boardroom

We all have our own story and even thought we share a common Puget Sound experience, we are very different people. This session will invite participants to explore challenges related to difference and practice creating space that welcomes. By sharing our story in a safe space (if participants choose to share), our learning is enhanced. Attendees will continue to apply asking open, honest questions and deepening learning skills.

All four sessions will be facilitated by Karen Harding in association with the Center for Courage and Renewal

Space is limited to 20 participants. This series is sequential, so we ask that you make a commitment to attend all four sessions before registering.

From Fixing to Healing: Transforming our Relationship to Conflict

Thursday, October 31, from 10a.m. to 12p.m. (light refreshments available at 9:30a.m.), Trimble Forum

When addressing conflicts feels urgent, how do we work from a place that sustains us and those we work alongside? Mindfulness practices, by helping us shift from fixing to healing, teach us to respond rather than react. We tap into our body's natural care-giving system to generate the support and creativity we need for wise action. In this 2-hour workshop, we'll reflect on fixing versus healing and learn foundational practices to initiate this shift.

Facilitated by Allison Schuette of Mindful Pause Center.

Space is limited to 15 participants. This session is open to all Puget Sound staff members and may have particular benefit for supervisors.
