H.C. "Joe" Harned '51 Joe Harned was born in Ursina, Pennsylvania, in 1917. An ardent patriot, he served his country in WWII and participated in the Battle of Midway. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945 and adopted Tacoma as his home. He attended the University of Puget Sound and went on to become a successful real estate developer, expanding Pierce County's commercial base and providing affordable housing for many of its residents. Joe's many philanthropic contributions include those that further education in both Pennsylvania and Washington. He created the H.C. "Joe" Harned Endowed Scholarship at Puget Sound in 2004, in addition to making a significant gift to the construction of this building. Joe's civic and philanthropic work truly exemplifies the values of a Puget Sound education. The university is pleased to name Harned Hall in his honor.
