History of Chersonesos

The ancient city of Chersonesos is located at the southwest tip of the Crimea on the Black Sea, within the modern city of Sebastopol.

In 1994, teams from the United States, the Ukraine, and the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos created the Black Sea Project.

Excavations were conducted around the so-called 1935 basilica, which provided extensive information about earlier excavations as well as the discovery of a Roman synagogue over which the 6th century Christian basilica was built.

This site contains extensive records of the five years of work at Chersonesos in terms of articles and reports, GIS and other mapping, CAD and similar drawings, photographs, databases and much more.

Archaeological projects must keep meticulous records of all phases of the excavation process as archaeology itself is a destructive science - once the layer, the artifact or the wall has been exposed or removed, there's no turning back the pages.  So, by keeping copious notes and records, archaeologists are able to analyse, assess and even reconstruct the excavation site to the best of their ability (and their notes) after-the-fact.

This webpage contains scans of the actual fieldwork logbooks kept throughout the excavation seasons at Chersonesos. Just click on the logbook links to open Flash flipbooks of each of the logbooks.
